Welcome to the Big Lake Community Food Shelf Website

The Big Lake Community Food Shelf is a 501 [c] [3] non-profit organization founded in 1995 by a group of citizens with the Big Lake area. This group of individuals saw the need to help those within their community with access to emergency food assistance.

Today the Board of Directors, along with a dedicated group of volunteers, continues to serve those within Big Lake School District #727 with emergency food access as well as providing additional resources and assistance with supplemental programs through federal, state and county agencies. The food shelf takes pride in providing a leadership role in supporting and providing education and resources for those within the community.

Did you know……1 in 10 Minnesotans or more than 500,000 state residents experience food insecurity on a regular basis. The USDA defines food insecurity as meaning “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.” Acceptable shorthand terms for food insecurity are “hungry, or at risk of hunger,” and “hungry or faced the threat of hunger.” Food insecurity can also accurately be described as “a financial juggling act, where sometimes the food ball gets dropped.”
